ab.dll - What is ab.dll?

ab.dll File Description:

The file ab.dll, functions as the Microsoft Mail for Windows Address Book. It is an application component of the Microsoft Mail for Windows software. The file ab.dll has a file size of 97600 bytes.

Introduced in 1988 based on Intermail, also a Microsoft product, the earliest Microsoft Mail utility was made for AppleTalk Networks. In 1991, based on another in-house product called Network Courier, Microsoft Mail was made for PC Networks. Recently, Microsoft Mail was replaced by Microsoft Exchange Server version 4.0.

With the use of the file ab.dll, Microsoft Mail can be utilized as a system where file sharing is done. Microsoft Mail acts a "post office" where files are stored in a database. To use this application, the clients who write their mails must be using file sharing and mapped network drives. Between these "post offices", a mail is required to have Message Transfer Agents (MTAs) that run on the Microsoft Disk Operating System and interact with the ab.dll module.

While a post office can store up to only 500 mailboxes, a sizable, busy enterprise could require many post offices where many MTAs are attached. This situation becomes a huge problem because it could lead to file locking. As a solution, a method emerged called Global Address List, comprising of synchronized directories, using MsMail 3.X directory synchronization protocol and the software dispatch.exe.

As an organizing staple in communications, an address book is a database, which functions as storage for entries called contacts. Consisting of some indispensable details such as name, address and telephone number, these contacts enter into systems that store the information in alphabetical order.
