aclui.dll - What is aclui.dll?
aclui.dll File Description:
The Security Descriptor contains the following flags:
Owner SID (WhatIsOwnership)
DACL: Discretionary Access Control List (WhatIsAnAccessControlList)
SACL: System Access Control List (WhatIsAnAccessControlList)
Programmers cannot actually see the security descriptor in the registry because Windows does not document how it is physically stored for each type of object. For example, the security settings for a file will be stored as metadata in the NTFS file system which is hidden from view. What the aclui.dll file can do, is to allow the programmer to read the metadata and trace the security descriptor so that he can edit or modify it.
Objects in Windows NT are protected with security descriptors. Programmers assign an Access Control List (DACL) contained in the security descriptor for each machine. It is in the DACL that user accounts are listed with an assigned access mask, which is a collection of individual access rights. Thus, using the aclui.dll file, the programmer can dynamically edit the entries in the DACL to modify user-assigned settings. To protect a Directory object, an appropriate DACL must be inserted in the NT-Security-Descriptor attribute. The programmer can open DACL to access the entries (ACCESS_ALLOWED_ACEs). Each entry lists a user security identifier with an access mask assigned.
The aclui.dll file contains MAPI or DAPI calls that it uses to access the content of the NT-Security-Descriptor. DAPI calls are less preferred when retrieving and modifying security descriptor content due mainly to the low performance of the DAPIStart call. When implementing production code in the aclui.dll file, the programmer can either cache a DAPI session at start up or use MAPI.Author: Microsoft Corporation
