alink.dll - What is alink.dll?
alink.dll File Description:
The alink.dll module or al.exe compiles a target into an assembly after copying contents of a file/module to the file specified by the target. It also copies the contents of embedded resources specified by a file in the image that contains the assembly which manifests as portable executable images.
In .NET Framework programming, the assembly can be fully or partially signed using /delay [sign][+|-] assembly linker (al) resource. If you want a fully signed assembly, you should use the /delaysign- al resource. Also, if you want to place a public key in the assembly, you should use the /delaysign+ al resource. When you request a fully signed assembly, the alink.dll module hashes the file that contains the assembly metadata, and it subsequently signs that hash with a private key. The resulting digital signature is stored in the file that contains the assembly metadata.
The /keyfile or /keyname assembly linker resource is used to specify a container that holds a key pair. This al resource will sign the assembly giving it a name by inserting a public key into the assembly manifest. The alink.dll module will then sign the assembly with the private key.
The alink.dll module is associated with the GetALinkMessage DLL Function in .NET Framework. This function is responsible for finding and loading the message DLL. This function will not work without the alink.dll module. The alink.dll module helps this function to determine if the message DLL can be located or loaded.
In building a Visual C/C++ program, it is important that the versions of the linker and alink.dll module in the assembly match so as to avoid linking tool errors.Author: Microsoft Corporation
