amstream.dll - What is amstream.dll?
amstream.dll File Description:
DirectShow contains architecture that controls and processes streams of multimedia data through custom or built-in filters. In addition to this architecture and the set of classes and interfaces to support it, DirectShow is also a runtime known as the amstream.dll module. This DLL uses this architecture to enable users to play digital movies and sound encoded in various formats. The amstream.dll file is a control module called the Active Movie Control with a set of dynamic link libraries that enable you to view supported media files such as MPEG, AVI, MOV, and WAV formats.
DirectShow Runtime or the amstream.dll module includes three runtime sets, namely:
•and End-User Runtime.
The SDK Runtime is optionally installed during the SDK installation. It supplies the necessary files for execution on the developer's system. The DirectX control panel allows you to switch between debug and retail versions during installation. However, the amstream.dll file does not participate in this switching feature. This is the reason why it requires runtime reinstallation so as to place the proper versions. The SDK Runtime installer and cab package cannot be redistributed.
Another runtime set of the amstream.dll module is the Redistribution Runtime. It includes cab file sets to support major operating systems such as Windows NT, Windows 95 and Windows 98. The files within these cab file sets contain localization for all languages. Inside the Redistribution Runtime is a default installer executable that uses the DirectX Setup API, which is simple and well described in the DirectX C++ documentation under DirectSetup. The Setup API manages the installation on all supported platforms.
The End-User Runtime is the last runtime set of the DLL amstream.dll. It has a separate set of size-optimized self-extracting executable files for each major operating system family and supported language. This runtime set is only available from Microsoft. Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition contain the final DirectX 8.1 runtime. Thus, if there are attempts to install DirectX 8.0 or earlier runtime versions on these operating systems, it will still succeed but will not be able to update any files.Author: Microsoft Corporation
