api.dll - What is api.dll?

api.dll File Description:

The DLL api.dll means Application Programming Interface which is a core set of application programs used to communicate with software applications and other control programs or communication protocols. It is usually made available by operating environments like Microsoft Windows to enable programmers to write applications consistent with the operating environment.

There are more than a thousand API calls in a full-blown operating system such as Windows, Unix, Macintosh, etc., thus the module api.dll can sometimes be overwhelming, and especially the calls to the user interface routines to display contents on the screen. The file api.dll can be opened when the program starts and closed when program execution is completed. Or it can be opened just before calling the functions and then closed immediately afterward.

The functionality provided by the api.dll module can be grouped into seven categories such as the Base Services, the Graphics Device Interface, the User Interface, the Common Dialog Box Library, the Common Control Library, the Windows Shell, and the Network Services.

The Base Services of the application api.dll provides access to the fundamental resources available to a Windows system while the Graphics Device Interface provides the functionality for outputting graphical content to monitors, printers and other output devices. The User Interface provides the functionality to create and manage screen windows and most basic controls, such as buttons and scrollbars, receive mouse and keyboard input, and other functionality associated with the GUI part of Windows.

On the other hand, the Common Dialog Box Library provides applications to the standard dialog boxes for opening and saving files, choosing color and font, etc. The Common Control Library gives applications access to some advanced controls provided by the operating system. These include things like status bars, progress bars, toolbars and tabs.

The last two functionalities of the api.dll module are the Windows Shell, a component of the Windows API which allows applications to access the functionality provided by the operating system shell, as well as change and enhance it; and the Network Services which gives access to the various networking capabilities of the operating system. Its sub-components include NetBIOS, Winsock, NetDDE, RPC and many others.

The program api.dll has undergone various changes and additions since its creation. For example, the Windows API for Windows 1.0 used to support approximately 450 calls, and to date, modern versions of this Window API are close to a thousand. Despite these changes, however, Windows assures that a programmer would still be able to comprehend the old Windows 1.0 version of the api.dll application even if he is more accustomed to the latest version of the api.dll module. However, Windows tried to keep the name of the api.dll file but eventually changed it from Win32 API family into Windows API, so as to make it into a catch-all term for both past and future versions of the API.
