author.dll - What is author.dll?

author.dll File Description:

The file author.dll is among the FrontPage Server Extension files that enhance Web servers by permitting authors to remotely manage and publish Websites. The file author.dll and the other extension servers work directly with the FrontPage designer to change Web permissions, to upload files and connect to data sources. The extension files also have a runtime component that allows advance features such as WebBots. WebBots features include content linking, posting and discussion pages. Most Web hosting providers use these FrontPage Server Extensions that include the file author.dll so that the user/customers can seamlessly publish a FrontPage Website.

When the user installs FrontPage Server Extensions on a Website that is hosted on a Windows server, the software consists of the following binary files:

•the admin.dll file;

•the shtml.exe process;

•and the module author.dll.

These binary files implement certain components to the Website. The admin.dll file will implement administration. The shtml.exe process will implement runtime components and the author.dll file will implement authoring services.

The said binary files or FrontPage Server Extensions are not just for FrontPage users. There are many other Microsoft technologies that use the said extensions such as the file author.dll. Examples of these include Web Folders, Office Web publishing, and Sharepoint Team Services. These files are important components to the Microsoft Web Strategy.

Some servers and security documents recommend simply removing FrontPage Server extensions because of its potential serious security vulnerabilities. Since removing it from the server will disable some of the major features of your FrontPage Website, it is highly advised to leave this module and the other binary files in your system.
