kbdibm02.dll File Description:

The kbdibm02.dll module is described as the JP Japanese Keyboard Layout for IBM 5576-002/003. It is a component that drives the 106/109 button IBM 5576-002/003 Japanese format keyboards.

There have been numerous keyboard layouts in Japan, which include the ones of old 8-bit and 16-bit proprietary PCs, IBM PC/AT compatibles, Macintoshes, UNIX workstations etc. Most of them, though, are based on the JIS or the Japanese Industrial Standard and share the parallel layout about alphabet, symbols, numerals, and kana (Japanese syllabic characters). Hence, standard Japanese keyboards are frequently called JIS layout keyboards. The kbdibm02.dll module interprets the layout of this keyboard for the machine.

In the kbdibm02.dll module, up to 4 characters are assigned to a single key. On the key they are: on left the alphanumeric mode, on top the alphanumeric shift mode, at the bottom the kana mode, on the right the kana shift mode. The kbdibm02.dll module permits the user to input kana characters in kana mode. Press the right of the space key (or the Kana key) and the user can toggle between alphanumeric mode and Kana mode.

The IBM 5576-002/003 and compatible keyboards are commonly called 106 Japanese keyboards since they have 106 keys. Recently there are three Microsoft defined keys that were added and the number of the keys increased to 109. The kbdibm02.dll module recognizes and handles both the 106 and 109 button keyboard.

The kbdibm02.dll module keeps the layout of symbols on the Japanese keyboard. Some symbols are identical to the US layout, but many differ. Basically, the scan codes of the Japanese 106 / 109 keyboards are the same as the ones that keys in the corresponding positions in the 101 US keyboard would produce. Thus, when the kbdibm02.dll module is not loaded, the Japanese keyboard operates as if a US keyboard.

Also, for the kbdibm02.dll module to take effect, make sure to go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Languages, and check the Install files for East Asian Languages check box. Then click on the 'Advanced' tab, and make sure you have Japanese selected under Language for non-Unicode Programs.
