kerberos.dll File Description:

The DLL kerberos.dll file is an essential process file for running authentication protocols in Microsoft Windows. It is another type of authentication scheme that has been approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

As a security support provider, the kerberos.dll file provides the authentication protocol needed for a client and a network to interact. It uses a network Authentication Service known as a Key Distribution Center (KDC). Each domain controller in Windows operating systems implements a KDC as its authentication server.

Microsoft Corporation uses the kerberos.dll file as the underlying protocol for Active Directory. It integrates Windows security services running on the domain controller with the Kerberos server. The kerberos.dll file thus uses the Active Directory as the account database for users and groups. The Active Directory is implemented as a directory service for the kerberos.dll file's security accounts. With this, mutual authentication between a client and a server or between one server and another server is made possible with the kerberos.dll file.

With the development of the kerberos.dll file, authentication protocols have been greatly enhanced and simplified. The kerberos.dll file can replace plaintext, NTLM, or digest method. Kerberos authentication can be more secure, more efficient and easy to use than other authentication schemes. It offers features absent in NTLM or other older authentication protocols.

For one, this DLL makes use of delegated authentication. In calling on the kerberos.dll file, a proxy mechanism is implemented to enable a service to impersonate its client when connecting to other services. It also offers interoperability with other networks. Moreover, it does not require an application server to connect to a domain controller in order to authenticate each client. What it does is to allow the server to authenticate each client by examining the credentials presented by the client. These credentials can be obtained by the client from the server and the user can reuse these throughout a network logon session. Lastly, as discussed above, the kerberos.dll file offers mutual authentication.
