php_gd.dll - What is php_gd.dll?
php_gd.dll File Description:
The GD Library which is usually bundled with PHP, call on the php_gd.dll application for graphics generation and manipulation. The program starts creating graphics by writing codes from simple text. It then moves to drawing the images to editing and manipulating them. These drawing basics can also be used to create charts and graphs with your website data.
When you upload pictures, it is best to resize them to fit in the appropriate space. You can dynamically create thumbnails with the use of php_gd.dll module from the photos you have uploaded or from other graphics on the server. Rotating is another useful way to manipulate an image. This can also be done with the use of the php_gd.dll application.
The php_gd.dll can be used with a variety of image file format such as GIF, JPEG, PNG, WBMP and XPM. GIF or Graphical Interchange Format supports image compression up to 256 colors and is supported by most browsers, while PNG or Portable Network Graphics supports compression format in most ways superior to GIF. In contrast, JPEG or Joint Photographic Experts Group which supports full color images and enjoys the support of all image browsers is a lossy compression algorithm.
The format of images that can be manipulated by the php_gd.dll module depends on the version of the GraphicsDraw installed and any other libraries that might need to access the image formats. Versions of the GD Library older than GD 1.6 support GIF but do not support PNG while versions that are greater than GD 1.6 and less than GD 2.0.28 support PNG but not GIF. However, GIF support was later renabled in GD 2.0.28.
The GD Library requires PHP 4.3.2 of higher in order to work. It can be configured by simply locating the php.ini and under the Dynamic Extensions remove the colon character (;) before the line "extension_dir=c:/php/includes" and "extension=php_gd.dll".
