pstorerc.dll - What is pstorerc.dll?
pstorerc.dll File Description:
Though now cleared of its bad reputation in the past, much of the problem emanated from one WinNT component. This is the pstorerc.dll module. The pstorerc.dll module made it quite impossible for the system to recover from a previous update thereby making the whole network unstable and prone to crashes. The pstorerc.dll module however is not totally to blame. However, much of the modules in WinNT have been compromised and all fingers point to the pstorerc.dll module as the culprit.
The pstorerc.dll module has one function: make protocol calls that enable storage resources be made available BY the system and TO the system in one swoop. This is where the pstorerc.dll file dilemma comes in. Whenever an attempt is made to update the WinNT version to a supposedly more stable one (i.e. sp1, sp2, sp3 and sp4, respectively), the updates affect ALL modules-including the pstorerc.dll module. When this happens, the file loses "sight" of its previous condition and becomes "lost" in its search for it. Once this happens, everything that it had stored previously (through its protocol calls to other related DLL files) would have disappeared permanently.
This dilemma of the pstorerc.dll module was eventually fixed when Windows XP came out. Microsoft included a RESTORE option within the system to prevent it from crashing. The pstorerc.dll module was given a brand new lease in life by this move. Sadly, this move was not echoed in WinNT version 5.0 and in Windows 2000 Network Servers.Author: Microsoft Corporation
