The application chkdsk.exe is run from the command line to verify the integrity of a current file system on Windows. The process chkdsk.exe detects and attempts to repair the data in the file system, as long as the files are not in read-only mode. The program chkdsk.exe is described as the Check Disk Utility and has a known file size of 12,288 bytes and a product version of 5.1.2600.0 on the Windows XP Professional platform. The process chkdsk.exe can launch a command line window but it also has a graphical interface that can be run by right clicking on a drive in Windows File Manager and selecting Properties > Tools (Tab) > and clicking on the Check Now button. When the user checks both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" it will begin to analyze the drive. It will be adviseable not to use the computer while a the Check Disk Utility is running.
The command line version of the program chkdsk.exe may be started by launching a command window. The user can click on Start > Run and then type "cmd" (minus the quotes) into the text box. Hitting the Enter key or clicking on the OK button will start a command window. The user can then type "chkdsk" on the command line to launch the Check Disk Utility. The program chkdsk.exe on its own will not fix any errors as it runs in read-only mode by default. It will only check a disk and display a status report. For it to fix anything the application chkdsk.exe must be coupled with switches, which can be displayed if the user types "chkdsk /?" (minus the quotes) on the command line.
The file chkdsk.exe is a valid Windows system file that should not be deleted or altered in any way unless there are concerns that it is not the legitimate chkdsk.exe process.
