The file smc.exe has three locations when it is installed in your system, but the most common location being C:/Program Files/Sygate/SSA/(other locations include C:/Windows/System32/). The process will be included in your startup group and would initialize upon boot, and has a startup registry value of "Sygate Security Agent" under the registry locations HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/SmcService/, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/, HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/User Shell Folders/, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunServices/, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/User Shell Folders/

The process smc.exe will listen to various information or data packets being sent over through LAN and internet ports and will detect if there are malicious intrusions, Trojans, viruses or other internet and LAN-based threat invading your system.

One active, the file will have no visible window yet it will have an icon in your system tray; the process smc.exe takes up a total of 2.5MB of RAM and virtual resources during these instances. Though uncommon, the process smc.exe tends to reach the limit of 100% CPU usage sometimes causing the system to freeze. These instances are usually observed when the total downloads of a system exceeds 200000KB/sec or when a large amount of file is being downloaded. Restarting the computer will solve this issue.

The process smc.exe is not a window core file and does affect the overall functionality of the system. If a scenario occurs that the process hogs more than 50% CPU resources, then disabling it would be the best recourse; using Task Manager to disable the process when active, as well as using WinTask or MsConfig to remove the process in your startup group.
