The process spamkiller.exe is part of the McAfee SpamKiller software developed by McAfee.Com. The application is used to filter emails coming into the user's inbox.
Before installing the application in your system, the system must have a POP3, MSN/Hotmail or MAPI email account. Email software such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Windows 98, and NT4, ME, 2000 or XP operating system. The application also requires a minimum of 5MB of disk space to be installed in your system.
The file spamkiller.exe is located under C:/Program Files/McAfee.Com/SpamKiller/when it is installed in your system. The process will be included in your startup group as well a startup registry value of "SpamKiller" located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/.
Once active, the process will have no visible window, yet an icon will be placed in your system tray; when clicked, it will open the SpamKiller window to allow the users to change various configurations and settings for the functionality of the application.
Functions of the system include scanning and blocking emails using lists and preset filters, filtering MSN, HOTMAIL, POP3 and MAPI emails coming to your inbox, allows the user to create custom filters to further scan various email, quarantines spam mails separately from your inbox. The application also has the capability to monitor multiple email accounts all at the same time.
The application, as well as the spamkiller.exe process, are not core windows component and will not hinder the optimum functionality of the system when removed or disabled. The process can be disabled from your startup group to save system resources by using WinTask or MsConfig.
It can also be removed from the system when the user deems it necessary. You may use the uninstall application that comes with the software, or through the Add/Remove Programs applet in your Control Panel.
