What is the .ATT File Extension?

The ATT file extension can be used by e-mail attachments. In some cases, the .att file extension is added to attachments if the system does not recognize the proper format of the file. The file extension can be changed so that it can be accessed correctly.

The most common use of the .att file extension is for data from web forms. Web forms are made up of fields on a web page wherein users can enter their information. The answers are given the file name 'POSTDATA' with the file extension ATT. Data from web forms with the .att file extension can be opened using any plain text editor. The information stored in files with the ATT file extension can also be imported to Microsoft Excel. Files with the .att file extension are made up of plain text characters, which represent the answers to a form. These are mixed with special characters that symbolize the fields and formats in the web form.

The Alphacam program also uses the ATT file extension. This application is used as a computer aided design and manufacturing tool for wood-based furniture. The .att file extension is attached to the file holding the process for the lathe tool. The file with the ATT file extension mimics the processes of an actual lathing machine. A lathe spins a block of wood to cut, knurl, drill a hole or sand it. Files with the .att file extension store the probable responses of a block of wood when a lathe machine is working it on. This allows the user to approximate what a block of wood would look like if a real lathe processes it.

AT&T's line of fax modems and software also use the ATT file extension. AT&T Inc. specializes in telecommunications. They offer telephone lines, Internet cable and wireless service as well as electronic fax. Electronic fax allows faxes to be received and interpreted by computers. Instead of the signals being sent to another fax machine and printed out, they are received by a program, which translates them into a digital image. Electronic faxes received by AT&T software are given the .att file extension.

The SeeYou program from Naviter also uses the ATT file extension. SeeYou is used to plan and analyze flights made on glider planes. Glider planes use air currents instead of engines for sustained flight. These planes depend on masses of rising air to maintain their altitude. The SeeYou program uses maps and airspace information to help pilots map their flights. Files with the .att file extension are used to plot actual flights based on masses of rising air.
