What is the .CBM File Extension?
.CBM File Extension Description:
The CBM file extension is used on compiled bitmaps. A compiled bitmap is the output of a technique that is used to draw a specific image to the screen. The data for that image is loaded from the instruction stream itself and not from the source.
Files with the .cbm file extension are only useful if you are using Xlib, a C language subroutine library used by clients or application programs to interface with the X Window System by means of a stream connection.
It is designed to run on computers with either monochrome or color bitmap display hardware. It provides storage of graphics objects off-screen called pixmaps, which can be used interchangeably with Windows in most graphics functions. Pixmaps with depth 1 single plane are referred to as bitmaps.
Xlib provides functions that can be used to transfer images between the client and the server. This is why Xlib uses the file with the .cbm file extension, which completely loads the data in memory and provides basic instructions on the data. The data is loaded from the instruction stream and not directly from the data.
The CBM file extension is also one of the several file extensions used by Fuzzy BitMap (FBM), a toolkit that allows manipulation and conversion of several image formats. FBM is designed to perform specific image operations such as scaling, sizing, retoning, etc. instead of converting the images from one format to another.
In FBM, files with the .cbm file extension can sometimes contain 24-bit colors including its title and credit. They are rendered for viewing by performing any of the following operations:
* Rotate it to 90, 180, or 270 degrees
* Change its density and contrast
* Resize it or change its aspect ratio
* Do some edge detection
* Sharpen its edges by Digital Laplacian
* Apply noise ditheringAuthor: Michael Mauldin
