What is the .CDX File Extension?
.CDX File Extension Description:
Microsoft Visual FoxPro is a database object oriented programming language that uses objects and their interactions to design applications, reuse components across applications, and manipulate data with its built-in XML support.
Visual FoxPro creates index keys when you create an index. For each record in the table based on the index expression that you supplied, it stores the index keys in the index file. The index file contains and maintains pointers to records in the table file that are organized according to the index key values.
Visual FoxPro supports two types of index files: the standalone and the compound index files. The standalone index files are those that use the IDX file extension. They store single index keys that are temporary and less frequently used. Files with the .idx file extension can be used as temporary indexes by creating or re-indexing the immediately before using them.
The compound index files are those that use the CDX file extension. They consist of one physical file that contains many index tags, each of which is an index order reference for the associated table. There are two types of files with the .cdx file extension: the structural and non-structural.
Visual FoxPro automatically creates structural files with the .cdx file extension when you create index for the table. This means that it treats these files as essential parts of the table, thus it opens and closes the structural files automatically when you open and close the table, and maintains them automatically when you add, change or delete the table records. Structural files with the .cdx file extension always have the same base name as the table file name and are used for indexes that are frequently used and maintained on a regular basis.
On the other hand, Visual FoxPro creates nonstructural files with the .cdx file extension to store multiple indexes that are not frequently used. These files are usually created for special purposes but you don not want them to be maintained by your application on a continuing basis. Nonstructural files with the .cdx file extension always have names that are defined by the user and are different from the table file names.Author: Microsoft Corporation
