What is the .CGI File Extension?
.CGI File Extension Description:
The .cgi file extension is defined as a "Common Gateway Interface," which is a base standard for synchronizing external applications with information servers that are found throughout the Internet or HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol).
Before the advent of CGI scripts, plain HTML documents are static documents that do not support any sudden change in information, like a text file. The CGI program is initialized and executed in real-time and conforms to the requirement for disseminating dynamic information - mostly on Web content.
In a simple sense, a CGI-format program allows different users across the Web to execute a program on your computer through a gateway or channel. This will allow end-users to dynamically view information stored in a database inside a Web server in real-time.
In order to create a script with a .cgi extension, the following programming languages can be used:
* PERL (dynamic/active programming language)
* Unix Shell Scripts
* Visual Basic
* Apple Script
Also, a document with a CGI file format provides an API, which can receive the user's input, and produce the necessary documents in HTML or XHTML form back to the user.
Using an HTTP server as an example, a script with a CGI file extension will retrieve information from the server, depending on how it is coded by the programmer. It will first query the server through a gateway (or an IP address), and then proceed to retrieving information from the database. Then, it will relay it back to the user using the Web browser to display the information as a Web document.
The coding of the CGI script will depend on the how the user wants to retrieve the information from a specific server, and how it is to be used in a system.Author: NCSA (,National Center for Supercomputing Application),
