What is the .CHI File Extension?
.CHI File Extension Description:
The files having a .chi extension are used in several programs; some are already discontinued, while some are still being maintained for commercial distribution. It basically serves a couple of functions, namely for word processing and as an index file. Basically an old format for files, the file extension .chi is rarely used nowadays, since it was originally conceptualized to work in an MS-DOS shell. It is still accessible under earlier versions of Microsoft Windows, but additional support for higher end operating system platforms has limited its usage.
Microsoft has utilized the CHI file extension for help file indexing, specifically in programs where the "help" file resides in the CD-ROM and is, therefore, non modifiable. The file extension .chi is then used to create the same help indexing file in a temporary folder.
The more popular application of the file extension .CHI is for the ChiWriter word processor. Saved documents under this are saved under the same .chi file extension. Files with the .chi extension support multifont support and allows higher resolutions for its documents. However, support for the Windows platform has not been extended, which eventually led to the discontinuation of the program itself and all other supported file types associated with it.
The independent developers of ChiWriter word processor also ceased plans of developing a Windows version of it, as funding became a problem. During that time, the transition to Windows and Microsoft Word as the main word processing program proved too difficult for ChiWriter to stay competitive.
Another program that employs the .chi file extension is the TOMBO Note Taker program. A native application of Windows CE, it is a note management application that functions similarly as a notepad, but with added features, like multiple pane view and encryption methods for sensitive documents. This has been considered as the outgrowth development for the CHI extension from the MS-DOS environment to mobile operating system platformsAuthor: Microsoft Corporation, Horstmann Software Development Corp, USA, Tomohisa Hirami and TOMBO Maintainers
