What is the .CLP File Extension?

.CLP File Extension Description:

The file with the CLP extension is being used by Microsoft Windows operating systems to store cut or copied data from Windows-based applications before they are pasted to another.

The .clp files will temporary store this information, which can later be retrieved by other applications and then automatically removed afterwards. The most common use for clipboards is for texts and images; but they can also be used to store a copy of the file for transfer.

To initiate the clipboard function of Windows, the user must select the text, file, or image to be copied over to the clipboard. They can use the copy (Ctrl+C) command, that stores a duplicate of the content into the clipboard, or cut (Ctrl+X), which removes the content from the application and transfers it over to the clipboard. Usually, the clipboard application runs in the background with no visible interface; yet, some programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have their own GUI that will list the entire item to be organized by the user.

Also, when the user pastes (Ctrl+V) the content into other applications, it will be removed from the CLP file. If the user wishes to have a copy of the clipboard content, they can save it as a separate file with a .clp extension.

Aside from Windows Clipboard, other applications, like ClipMagic, were developed to offset certain problems of Windows Clipboard, like:

* One item to be stored at a time

* Overwrite previous content (especially if using the same application)

* The data in the CLP file will be removed when the session is closed

* Inability to preview the entire data in Windows Clipboard.

The ClipMagic application works by making a copy of all data stored into the Windows Clipboard program, which can be later accessed by user even if the original session is closed.
