What is the .CLW File Extension?
.CLW File Extension Description:
Clarion is a 4GL programming language with IDE (Integrated Development Environment) used to program database applications. It reads and writes several database file formats such as ASCII, CSV, FoxPro, dBase, or SQL and can be used to output to XML, HTML, and PDF, among others. Its primary file format for DOS is the CLA file extension while the Clarion for Windows uses the CLW file extension.
One of Clarion's main features is the use of "templates" that can be generated with the use of a code generator named AppGen, which produces much of the repetitive code typically required when creating an application. AppGen has an "embeditor" that shows to developers the code that can be generated so that they can embed points and enter data with their own hand-code in the context of the template generated code.
The Clarion for Windows is Rapid Application Development (RAD) software that stores these template driven codes in the files with the .clw file extension. Developers to create highly complex "made to order" applications can finely tune these files. Thus, precious time and effort that should have been consumed by software developers in generating applications are saved.
Files with the .clw file extension are not just "pre-written" but are "pre-tested" because they are virtually guaranteed to compile and run the first time. This also avoids the painstaking process of debugging one statement at a time.
The Clarion for Windows applications reside in two repositories: the data dictionary and the application model. The data dictionary contains the information about how the data is stored, accessed, displayed, and processed. When the database, presentation style or rules of behavior changes, the developer simply corrects the data dictionary, synchronizes the application model, and regenerates the application.
The same methodology is used to maintain the application model. Because Clarion developers never change the generation source code stored in the files with the .clw file extension, they are embedded into the application model so they can be emitted along with the generated code every time the application generator is invoked.Author: TopSpeed Corporation
