What is the .CM File Extension?
.CM File Extension Description:
The CM file extension identifies configuration files obtained during the boot up process of the cable modem from the NTL network. These configuration files were developed in order to determine the quality of service (QOS) offered by NTL as well as provide the cable modem's firmware with necessary updates. Typically, these files are never transferred to the user's computer. Rather, it stays within the confines of the NTL network.
The QOS that the NTL cable modem system provides can be established through the filename of the.cm file, which depends on the package that the user has subscribed to, and these are particularly:
* •Gold - the volume of data flow is greater in one direction than the other (this means it is asymmetric), and its download speed is 1024 kbps while its upload speed is 256 kbps;
* •Silver - its data flow is also asymmetric, and its download speed is 600 kbps while its upload speed is 128 kbps;
* •Bronze - it is also asymmetric, and its download speed is 128 kbps whereas its upload speed is 64 kbps, and this is sometimes seen in digital TV set-top boxes in non-broadband areas;
* •Copper - it is also asymmetric in stand alone cable modems with download speed of 64 kbps and upload speed of 32 kbps, and yet in digital TV boxes, its download speed is 128 kbps while its data uploading capability is 64 kbps at max.
Any of these files can be found by inspecting the Event Log screen of the cable modem. Event Logs are displayed in reverse chronological order of "Last Time", which means the most recent event is located at the top of the screen.
NTL uses other configuration files with the .cm file extension such as the no-bia.cm file. This indicates that the digital setup box has no broadband Internet access. On the other hand, the noserv.cm file denotes cable modems with no Internet access while the unreg.cm file contains limited service pending registration completion.
Files with the .cm file extension also determine the QOS of cable modem by the maximum downstream and upstream transfer rates of data to and from the Internet and the individual computer.Author: Robin Walker
