What is the .COB File Extension?

.COB File Extension Description:

The .cob file extension is the project file of COBOL. COBOL is the acronym for Common Business-Oriented Language, which was developed in 1959 by the Short Range Committee of the United States Department of Defense, and dubbed as one of the earliest programming languages used for business applications.

The latest version of COBOL was developed in 2002 (COBOL 2002) and is no longer undergoing any redevelopment, due to the existence of other high-end programming languages. Categorized as a developers file, the .cob file extension contains the source codes written in the syntax known only to COBOL, such as the example below:

IDENTIFICATION DIVISION.

PROGRAM-ID. HELLO-WORLD.

PROCEDURE DIVISION.

MAIN.

DISPLAY 'Hello, world.'.

STOP RUN.

(This code displays the text "Hello, world." on the screen and stops)

Unlike other high-end programming languages today, COBOL does not support structure programming protocols that allow faster compilation and implementation during run-time. The program uses keywords instead of functions that embed certain tasks to the application itself.

The COBOL source code in a .cob file does not support local variables, dynamic memory allocation, recursion, or other high-end constructs in some of the latest high-end languages, like Microsoft Visual Basic.

A compiler is necessary to convert the codes found in the .cob file into an execution file. The compiler will translate the entire human-readable text file into computer languages so that the computer can execute it. During the compiling process for a .exe file, an object file (.obj) will also be created.

Initially, the first version of COBOL runs under the disk operating system (DOS) found in PCs. The latest version of COBOL called COBOL 2002 is known to run on Microsoft Windows operating systems and supports a Windows-based graphical user interface (GUI).
