What is the .CUT File Extension?

.CUT File Extension Description:

The file extension CUT is a co-associate dependent bitmap graphics used in Dr Halo III applications, as well as other third party applications, like Equilibrium and Picture Viewer. The file extension .cut allows 8-bit palette information to be allocated per pixel rendered, which provides 256 color images. It is dependent on a reference file for the actual palette information -- usually a .pal file for the color distribution. Without this palette information, the CUT file extension will still be able to render the pixel-point layout of the image, but will have no color and would just be in grayscale. The file format CUT also supports 2-bit color interfacing per pixel rendered, which provides 16 color images.

The structure of a file with the CUT extension is a run-length encoding scheme (RLE), which shows a straightforward syntax of pixel characteristics. The simplicity of the "compression" of data makes the file extension .cut open for use in many image renditions. However, the same simplicity of compression has limited the CUT format to be used in higher pixel information graphics. Furthermore, limitations with the CUT format cover image renditions of 64k by 64k pixels.

The file extension .cut accesses its co-dependency file .pal for the color information assigned to each of the image locations associated with it. The CUT format files then relay the image data, together with the color assignment by the palette file, to the program supporting the display.

The idea of having a separate .pal file extension is also beneficial to the .cut file, since an assignment and modification of colors would prompt the program to recompile the whole bitmap file. It can already locally change the palette information while retaining the image data stored in the CUT file.
