What is the .D64 File Extension?
.D64 File Extension Description:
Disk images that are saved from a Commodore 64 disk are saved in the file extension D64. These disk drives include 1541, 2031, 3040 and 4040. A disk image is a computer file that stores information of a storage device; this information includes whole contents and structure. This information is used to be able to emulate the structure and contents layout of the device, with the inclusion of its actual contents. Disk images are created based on the sectors of the device rather than the file system.
The Commodore 64 or C64 which generates the D64 file extension, is an 8 bit personal computer released in the year 1982. This computer has a 64kB of RAM with superior audio and graphics performance than any other personal computer available at that time. Its graphic chip is a VIC-II, which has 16 colors, 8 hardware sprites per scan, scrolling abilities and two bitmap graphic modes.
This graphic ship made the C64 a very capable platform for playing arcade type games. Its sound chip, a SID, contains three channels, all three having its own ADSR envelope generator with varying waveforms, ring modulator and filter capabilities. It uses an 8 bit 6510 microprocessor utilizing MOS technology; this was used to be able to switch the ROM of the computer in and out of the microprocessor's address, and to be able to use the datasette tape recorder.
The file containing the D64 file extension stores an image of an entire disk to be used with a Commodore emulator program. Emulator programs are applications that duplicate the functions of a specific system using an entirely different system; the end result would be the second system acting and behaving like the first one. There are programs, which are created to extract these images into a disk or to place a disk into an image. The D64 file extension is related to the X64 file extension; the only difference is an added 64 byte headed included on an X64 files.Author: Commodore International Corporation
