What is the .DAT File Extension?
.DAT File Extension Description:
The DAT file extension represents simple and generic data created by an application software or operating system. It can refer to just about any type of file - graphics, text, binary data, and so on.
A large number of programs use the .dat file extension. There is neither a specific structure nor any exact way of interpreting the content of the DAT file.
Files with the .dat extension are application-specific. Usually, only the program that created the .dat file can read it. Opening .dat files using any text editor may display some information about it. It may show readable information about the file, though it won't be typically precise. Knowing the exact application that created the .dat file will allow the user to accurately read it.
Other than housing data, the .dat file may also be associated with a specific Windows configuration file, or with Microsoft Outlook E-mail attachment files and VCD video files.
Index.dat files are Windows-specific configuration files. These have a hidden index of the Web pages that are accessed along with the e-mails that are sent. These .dat files are not deleted, even when the temporary Internet files are cleaned out. Index.dat files generally provide a somewhat permanent log for the computer.
Microsoft Outlook uses a specific .dat file called Winmail.dat. It is attached to emails in Rich Text Format (RTF). These .dat files are only used when a recipient's client has no RTF support. Winmail.dat files are only utilized in MS Outlook, or the MS Exchange server is used to retrieve the mail.
The .dat file extension can also be the format for Video VCD files. These .dat files are video streams that are typically from a video compact disc (VCD). They usually have an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 format and contain the actual video data to be played.Author: n/a
