What is the .DB$ File Extension?

.DB$ File Extension Description:

dBase is a program designed to create and manage databases. The application also comes with an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that allows users to create and develop applications for their databases. It is currently being developed and distributed by dBase, Inc.

Databases are collections of information arranged in a specific structure. This arranged storage of data allows Database Management Systems (DBMS) like dBase the ability to sort, edit and manage the information stored in them. Users can create reports from the database, easily find and sort data as well as create their own applications. dBase comes with its own programming language.

Programming script written in the dBase language can easily be compiled, linked or debugged using the tools in the IDE component of the program. The DB$ file extension is attached to temporary files created by the program.

Temporary files are used as placeholders of data for open files. When a database is open and another user is making changes, a temporary file with the extension .db$ will automatically be created by dBase. Files with the .db$ file extension track the progress in editing or making a file.

Temporary files with the .db$ file extension are often system files not frequently shown in the memory. Files with the DB$ file extension make sure that the data of the original file is preserved by saving any changes in another file. Once the original file is closed, temporary files with the file extension DB$ are automatically deleted by dBase.

Files with the file extension .db$ are also used by the Clarion program. Clarion is actually a programming language that also comes with its own IDE. It was originally developed by Bruce Barrington to write programs for databases. The IDE for the program was later developed by Jensen & Partners International to support other programming languages.

The DB$ file extension is attached to debug info generated by the Clarion IDE for the Modula-2 programming language. Debuggers are used to check for errors in programming script. Files with the .db$ file extension contain the results of debugging done on Modula-2 source code.
