What is the .DB2 File Extension?
.DB2 File Extension Description:
The file extension DB2 is used as for databases created by dBASE II. dBase was the first database management system (DBMS), popularly used for microcomputers and is currently the most accepted standard for databases. dBase has grown to become an object oriented programming language that is able to run on a 32 bit Windows platform. It is currently used by several applications and can work with new database engines using the ODBC driver. Data handling in dBase is supplied by a procedural command, and functions to access and navigate records that are in data files, to change field values, text strings, numbers and dates. dBase also utilizes an interpreter architecture that allows its users to execute commands by simply typing the commands in a command line.
When users type in the function or command, then press the return key, this interpreter would automatically and immediately evaluate and execute the command line. This interpreter makes dBase created programs simple, easy to create and test, because the programmers do not have to compile and link before execution. The interpreter also handles memory management automatically and dynamically, making dBase usable for users with no wide programming knowledge. dBase, which generates the db2 file extension, has an outstanding interactive data manipulation tool. It can also format, analyze, control, and perform different calculations on record, numbers and strings.
The file using the DB2 file extension is used by dBase II. dBase II is similar to its earlier version, dBase I. The difference is that dBase II contains more types of data than the original database format. dBase II file headers also have a fixed size of 521 bytes. The file extension DB2 is related to DB3, where DB3 is created by dBase III.
The file extension DB2 is also used as a file extension for dBfast files. dBfast is a program described as a dialect for MS-DOS and MS-Windows. This application is dBase compatible development system, which supports more that 200 language extensions, thus allowing dBase applications to be converted to a Windows application. In short, dBfast translates a database project into a Windows application.Author: dataBased Intelligence, Inc., Computer Associates International
