What is the .DBK File Extension?

.DBK File Extension Description:

The DBK file extension is used by the dBASE application to create backup files for the user's data. The dBASE program automatically generates a file with the .dbk file extension to provide a backup, in case the original file gets corrupted or lost. The dBASE data files are created with the DB2 or DBF file extensions. If there is an instance that a project is created, i.e. name.db2 or name.dbf, the program would create another file for future use, i.e. name.dbk or name.dbk.

Files with the .dbk file extension are compressed versions of the original file, thus, making them relatively small in size. The two main purposes of the DBK file extension are to restore the original state of a project, following a disaster (also called a disaster recovery), and to restore minute amounts of files after they have been accidentally deleted or corrupted. Additionally, files with the .dbk file extension are the last line of defense against several instances, like data loss.

The files with the .dbk file extension are different from the other files used for archiving, since these are the primary copies of the data, while the files with the .dbk file extension are the secondary copies.

The dBASE program is an application development toolset that includes the modern object oriented programming language, or dBL. This objects can run at Win32 machines and can be used to build a wide set of applications, like Web, server based applications, and more. The users would benefit from the automatic backup feature of the program since, most of the time, no one can tell when the data of a project will get corrupted. In addition, the dBASE program provides the DBK file extension to allow users to achieve the necessary security measures they will need for their projects.
