What is the .DBT File Extension?
.DBT File Extension Description:
xBase is the generic term for all programming languages derived from the original Aston-Tate dBase programming language. Its family of related databases covers the Foxpro, dBase, Clipper, and the Windows equivalent Visual FoxPro, Visual dBase, and Visual Objects.
xBase uses four basic types of files, namely:
* Data files - the core that all other system files are grouped around, without which there will be no database that use the DBF file extension.
* Index files - point to fields in the DBF file extension, and these files use the NDX, MDX and CDX file extensions.
* Descriptive files - describe labels, variables, stored expressions etc.
* Full text files - separate files containing memo fields, and it uses the DBT file extension.
Memo files that store full text data use the DBT file extension. The data are stored in simple 512 byte blocks but can be stored in continuous blocks if the data are more than 510 bytes. The data stored are variable length elements and huge amounts of actual formatted data are set in an assigned structured form.
Moreover, the only reference to the data in the file with the .dbt file extension is the pointer in the memo field. The memo field starts with a memo file header that contains only two values in its 512 bytes such as the next available block and the version number while the rest of the header is garbage. The next available block always points to the end of the file and its data can only be appended.
Although memo fields can be used for storing a variety of date types, type 3 files that have the file extension .dbt are actually limited to having the textual data stored due to the fact that several of the processing for the "internal memo field" in an actual type 3 file would depend on two assigned contiguous 0x1a characters.
For type 4 memo fields, the first block in the file with the .dbt file extension is a header block comprising 8 bytes of data. These data maintain the block size of the file with the .dbt file extension and the next free block available in the file. Blocks two through n contain the actual memo data. A chain of empty blocks is maintained within the file for potential future use.Author: dBase Technologies, Inc.
