What is the .DBX File Extension?

.DBX File Extension Description:

The .dbx file extension refers to the files that are associated with Microsoft's E-mail client, Outlook, or Outlook Express. DBX files are specific folders that contain information that the application receives.

For each Outlook mailbox or newsgroup, there is a corresponding file with the file extension .dbx. This file stores information, such as personal E-mail messages and other sensitive data.

The naming convention of these DBX files usually point to the name of the mail folder or newsgroup. For example, Sent.dbx is the name of the DBX file that houses the outgoing mail folder, while Inbox.dbx refers to the folder where all incoming mail is placed. All DBX files are also, in turn, stored in a common root directory folder, called the Store Folder.

The protocols that .dbx files use is HTTP, IMAP4, NNTP, POP3, and SMTP.

.dbx files to access its mailboxes and messages use HTTP. This is done by HTTP notifying users that a new message has arrived, thereby allow users to move, copy, or delete these messages.

The Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 (IMAP4) is utilized by .dbx files by searching a mailbox and allowing the placement of flags. These flags mark messages in .dbx files to identify that they have been read. IMAP4 does not send out mail.

DBX files also use the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) by accessing newsgroups. Users are allowed to post, read, and place items in the DBX files.

The Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is utilized by .dbx files by allowing the retrieval of messages, which are then placed in the Inbox.dbx file of Outlook. POP3 only deals with incoming mail and not the sending of it.

DBX files apply simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) by allowing the delivery of outgoing messages. These messages are placed in the Outgoing.dbx file and then moved into the Sent.dbx file, when they are successfully sent.
