What is the .DEB File Extension?
.DEB File Extension Description:
The DEB file extension is used to store compressed images for use with the Debian GNU/Linux platform. Debian is an operating system that is based on the Linux and Unix platforms. The operating system is made up entirely of programs that are distributed for free with released source codes. Processes used to make up the operating system are developed so that they can be distributed freely and developed openly by other programmers. Debian can be used as an operating system for servers or desktop computers.
The Debian system is updated by using a package management system. This system enforces the company's regulations about the quality of updates and releases for the program. The package management system is made up of tools, which install, upgrade, configure and remove software packages. Primarily Unix uses this system and Linux based computers to update them easily.
The DEB file extension is attached to compressed files. Files with the file extension .deb are often used to hold binary packages. The file extension .deb is derived from Debra, the then wife of the original developer of Debian, Ian Murdock. Files with the .deb file extension contain Unix archives. Compressed archives with the .deb file extension contain two archives. Archives stored with the .deb file extension are made up of either the gzip or the bzip format.
Files with the DEB file extension are meant to be operated by the Debian package management system, or DPKG. DPKG is used to install, remove and provide information on packages with the .deb file extension. Files with the DEB file extension contain updates for the Debian operating system. They can also hold programs meant to be used with Debian.
The 7-Zip file archiver can also open compressed archives with the DEB file extension. The program Alien can also convert packages with the DEB file extension into other formats.
Archives with the DEB file extension essentially have the same format as archives created by the archiver utility from Unix. Compressed files contain more than one file, which are translated into another character system to reduce the file size.Author: Debian Project
