What is the .DFS File Extension?
.DFS File Extension Description:
X-Plane is a flight simulator program allowing users to navigate the entire planet Earth in real-time with the most realistic multi-engine airplanes, sporting aircrafts, gliders, helicopters, jets, etc. You can land at any of its airports, aircraft carriers, helipads, building tops, and oilrigs or you can create your own scenery with its X-Plane scenery creator.
The X-Plane scenery is organized into scenery packages containing folders such as the Custom Objects, Custom Object Textures, Custom Terrain Textures, and Earth Nav Data. Each of these is contained in a single folder with the name of the package. These folders contain files that control the appearance and loading of these scenery packages ending with the extension DSF. They contain references to the objects and textures that make up the rest of the scenery packages. The extension DSF stands for Distribution Scenery Format.
Files with the .dsf extension represent locations on the Earth by way of degrees of latitude and longitude. All coordinates are stored as sets of fixed point integers scaled by 32-bit floating point numbers. Points are interpreted to a limited Cartesian coordinate structure before the geometry is constructed. This means "a line between two points in a file" with the .dsf extension is straight in the 3D space and not in the curved geographic coordinate space of the file.
The file with the .dsf extension defines the 3D model section of the Earth. Each file covers one square degree and is named according to its coordinates. An example is the +43-090.dsf file, which indicates that the file covers the Earth's square degree having 43 degrees North and 90 degrees West at its southwest corner. Similarly, the folder +43-090 contains all the files with the .dsf extension for a 10-degree square.
Files with the .dsf file extension are written in binary little endian format with floating numbers stored in 32 or 64 bits. These files are atomic. This means each atom of data has a size and ID at the beginning. The header of these files contains 8 bytes of cookies "XPLNEDSF" in ASCII characters followed by the master file format version with 32 bits of integers. A variable number of atoms follow the header. Each consists of the atom ID and the size of the atom. The file ends with the footer in 128-bit MD5 signature of previous contents forming a unique ID for this file.Author: Laminar Research
