What is the .DIC File Extension?

.DIC File Extension Description:

The DIC file extension is a dictionary file format that can be referenced by several word processors and software programs. The basic function of the file extension DIC is to check the spelling of the words in a document. In Microsoft Office, the file Custom.dic is being used. Whenever it detects a misspelled word, it immediately underlines the word with a red zigzag. The file with the .dic file extension would also provide a correct spelling alternative/s for the misspelled word.

Aside from the spelling check function of the file extension DIC, it also has the capability to add words. There are other programs from Microsoft that have the ability to automatically add a new word to the file with the .dic file extension each time the user adds a word. However, this is not true for Microsoft PowerPoint. The user still needs to exit the application before he or she can register the newly added word into the file with the .dic file extension. When a new word is added to the file with the .dic file extension, the word processing application automatically modifies the content of the file.

There are also other programs that have the ability to recognize a file with the .dic file extension, even if the file is not a native of the program. One example of such programs is Microsoft PowerPoint. When the user runs the spelling checker in the Microsoft PowerPoint application, the file with the .dic file extension, or Custom.dic, will be automatically copied into memory. The user who is checking the spelling of a word in a PowerPoint document causes the program to read from and write to the newly added file with the .dic file extension in memory. After exiting the application, the Microsoft PowerPoint automatically writes every change made during the session back to the file with the .dic file extension.
