What is the .DMP File Extension?

.DMP File Extension Description:

Considered as a system file for Microsoft Windows operating systems, like XP (both Professional and Home Edition) and Vista, the DMP file extension is associated with the memory dump files created by the system when it encounters an error, or a major system crash.

The DMP file extension is associated with data "dumped" from the volatile memory space of your system, like the RAM (Random Access Memory) and virtual memory cache.

When a program or the system encounters an error, it will automatically dump the memory in your RAM and virtual cache into a filename with a DMP extension. This can be used to troubleshoot the cause of the problem and find possible solutions for it.

The data "dumped" by the system will be automatically saved into a filename "memory.dmp" on the first reboot after the crash. Note, however, that these memory dumps can take a lot of disk space and may need to be deleted when they are no longer required for troubleshooting.

Aside from the errors encountered, it is also possible to initiate a manual memory dump that will produce the said DMP file. This can be done through the keyboard by pressing the CTRL key and the SCROLL LOCK twice. When successful, the screen will turn blue and display the following message:

STOP: 0x000000E2 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The end-user generated the so-called crashdump manually.

When you reboot the system, the "memory.dmp" file will be automatically created and you can use it to debug your system.

If you wish to check the settings regarding memory dumps, right click on My Computer then click on Properties. Click the Advance tab, and click the Startup and Recovery button. Select the "Write Debugging Information" where you can see "Small Memory Dump", "Complete Memory Dump", or "Kernel Memory Dump".
