What is the .DOC File Extension?
.DOC File Extension Description:
The popular .doc file extension, which stands for document, is the extension for Microsoft's MS Word application under the Microsoft Office Suite.
The .doc file format typically contains a large amount of text formatting features and writing tools. DOC Files can contain images, charts, tables, graphs, and the like. This format varies with the versions of MS Word, but each version generally maintains all basic text editing features.
Images that can be inserted in .doc files can be clipart or pictures that have a wide variety of formats. These formats include JPEG, BMP, GIF, and so on. Charts, tables, and graphs can be inserted from presentation programs, like MS PowerPoint and MS Excel.
Files with the .doc extension are native to MS Word, but can be read with other software. Examples of other applications are AbiWord and KWord; both of which are free software programs.
DOC files are also used as the default text editor for Microsoft Outlook. E-mails can be saved with the .doc file extension. When E-mails are sent and/or received, .doc files are automatically imported as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). This is possible through Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), an Internet standard that extends E-mail support to the MS Word application. The protocols used for sending E-mail created with .doc features are HTTP, IMAP4, NNTP, POP3, and SMTP.
Files with the .doc extension are saved as text formats and have a binary property. This means that DOC files use codes of a binary format for representing characters (letters and numbers). The code that .doc files use is called American Standard Code for Information Interchange, or ASCII.
The binary format for files with the .doc extension, referred to as compound files, is made up of six parts. These are the main stream, table stream, summary information stream, data stream, custom XML storage, and 0 or more object streams embedded within the OLE 2.0 private data.Author: Microsoft Corporation
