What is the .DOCX File Extension?

.DOCX File Extension Description:

The .docx file extension is a new extension developed by Microsoft Corporation for its office application, Microsoft Word. DOCX is the default file extension for Microsoft Word 2007 files, where the letter 'x' denotes its open XML feature.

The DOCX file extension is compatible with specific previous versions of MS Word, particularly versions 1997 to 2003. This means that the .docx file can be opened under any of those applications. The extension .docx is used instead of .doc, which was used before the 2007 version of MS Word.

The open XML definition of DOCX files is based on Extensible Markup Language, or XML -- the specification for creating markup languages in custom format. XML allows defining elements by users, and adheres to facilitating the sharing of data that are structured through the Internet.

DOCX files make use of open XML's file package based on the Opening Packaging Convention -- a format that stores XML and non-XML files together. Files with the .docx extension also use the ZIP format in its structure by holding in individual files that serve as the basis for forming the document. This results in a much lower size for the document. DOCX files can also embed files, such as videos, images, and other documents.

The primary markup language for .docx files is called WordprocessingML. This language can embed other markup languages, including the Office Math Markup Language. This language embedded into DOCX files provides support in revision markings, comment, footnotes, images, and elaborate styles and formatting.

The open XML standard in DOCX files is not the same as the open Document Standard, which is also a standard based on XML. Open Document is an open and free file format for office documents developed originally by Sun Microsystems.
