What is the .DOT File Extension?

.DOT File Extension Description:

Microsoft Corporation, to be used as a Word Document Template for the Microsoft Word application, created The DOT file extension. MS Word is defined as word processing authoring software that allows users to create documents with various styles and formats.

Some document template files (.dot) are already included in the application when you install it in your system. The .dot format files range from generic formatting, like resumes, application and resignation letters, and so on, to complicated business/office related documents, like projects, business memos, agendas, corporate meetings documents, and so on.

Note, however, that when you open a file with a .dot extension, it will be opened as a Microsoft Word document, though in a .dot file format. To change this to a .doc, the user can simply save the file as a word document (Save As > File Type). Notice also the difference in the icon of DOT from DOC, which is one way to differentiate the two.

A file with a .dot extension incorporates the following data:

* Header and ID of the file as a word document template (to be recognized by the system)

* Text that forms the basic template as defined by the user

* Text formatting (font color, size and face, indentation, margin, and so on)

* Background color, textboxes, and tables

* Images/graphics to be used as background

In truth, we can say that a .dot format is a prelude to a Word document. When you open a template using Microsoft Word, you might notice the file name is still in the default "document1.doc" and not the filename of the template you opened. After you make the necessary changes in the template and proceed to saving your work, using the "save" function will result in opening the "save as" window; thus, prompting the user to choose a location, filename, and file type for his or her document.
