What is the .DVI File Extension?
.DVI File Extension Description:
The Device Independent File format was developed by David Fuchs back in 1979, as the output format of files from the typesetting program called TeX. Output files are saved in a DVI file extension, and are wholly different from mark up files in TeX that generates these files. Files in the .dvi file extension are not meant to be human readable, and contain binary data that provides information of the document's visual layout.
Also, files in the .dvi file extension do not rely on a particular image format, printer, or display hardware. Files in this format are usually used as an input to a DVI driver that acts as the translator for files in the .dvi file extension into graphical data. This driver is also able to convert files in the .dvi file extension into other popular formats for documents like PDF, and Post Script. However, DVI files are different, because it cannot support font embedding. References to the font can be installed, if a file with the .dvi file extension has to be printed.
TeX software has an included program to preview files in the .dvi file extension on a computer. Files in the .dvi file extension are designed to be machine readable and compact. In addition, it does not rely on the system that is processing it, but relies on character encodings of the referenced font.
TeX was very popular in the mathematics and physics academia, because it is considered as the ideal way to typeset complicated mathematical formula. It is involved in presenting material in the textual form, into a graphic form. Some tools that translate files in the .dvi file extension are dvipdf, which modifies it to PDF files, dvipdfm, which is able to produce PDF files of a far superior quality than dvipdf, and dvipdfmx, which is the extended version of dvipdfm, with a main goal of supporting character encoding in multi-bytes and East Asian language character sets.Author: David R.
