What is the .EFE File Extension?
.EFE File Extension Description:
Files with the .efe file extension are instrument files used by the Ensoniq Performance Sampler (EPS). They are similar to files with the .wav file extension but they include pitch and key information indicating where the samples are played back on a MIDI keyboard.
The EPS is not just a professional studio music production tool but also a live performance instrument that has the ability to load new samples while playing the instrument. It brought together the facets of sampling, synthesis, and performance and blended them together in the EPS. This 12-bit EPS is an alternative for any musician in search of classic keyboard samplers.
EPS stores its instrument files on its own proprietary disk format, but these instrument files can also be read and stored as files with the .efe file extension on DOS drive. In fact, any of the file types on EPS can be converted to files with the .efe file extension.
Files with the .efe file extension start with the 512 byte header followed by the ASCII strings including Instrument, Bank, Effect, Song/Seg, Sequence, Macro, and System Ex. In other words, when you write a file with the .efe file extension, a 512 byte block is written to the disk, and these ASCII strings to the end of the header. All of these parts are used only to reproduce a line of text on the screen. The next part of the header consists of the data contained in the directory entry of the file with the .efe file extension.
EPS can store files with identical name but with different type in one directory. If these files are copied to a DOS or Windows drive, they all have the same name. In order to differentiate them from other files with the .efe file extension, the original filename will be stored with the EFE file header ending with strange numbers at the end such as AS-1BANK1..efe or STREO VIOLNS..efe. This way, you do not have to rename the files if you want to copy them back to another Ensoniq drive.
The EFE file extension along with other file types found in the EPS such as EDE, EFA, EDA, and GKH file extension cannot be used or play on the computer or other brands of sampling keyboards. They are intended only for use with Ensoniq-brand samplers.
However, there are now programs that translate these files, including the files with the .efe file extension into standard computer file formats.Author: ENSONIQ Corporation
