What is the .EGA File Extension?
.EGA File Extension Description:
The file extension EGA is defined with the standard specification of IBM between VGA and CGA displays. The specification is often a combination of display resolution and color depth. IBM introduced it in 1984 for its EGA cards that produce 16 colors graphics display and 640x350 pixel resolutions. The graphics data contained within the EGA cards are stored in files that end with the file extension EGA.
Files with the .ega file extension contain graphics functions; settings and configuration of EGA cards installed in your computer particularly the EGA palette. The palette allows the use of all 16 CGA colors simultaneously, giving each of these colors to be selected from a total of 64 colors.
The EGA color palette allows the selection of two bits for the red, green and blue channels with a value of 0, 1, 2 or 3 for each channel. In the 64-color EGA palette, the intended value of the binary number of the intended entry is in the form of rgbRGB. This means that the lowercase letter is the least important bit of the channel intensity whereas the uppercase letter is the most important bit.
In a standard RGB format, the data stored in files with the .ega file extension are stored in 16 triples where each triple contains a 3-byte quantity value of Red, Green, and Blue ranging from 0 to 255. This means that if there are 4 levels of RGB for each color where 256/4=64, the settings and levels in files with the .ega file extension could be level 0 for 0-63 settings, level 1 for settings from 64 to 127, level 2 for 128 to 192 settings, and level 3 for settings from 193 to 254.
Graphics contained in files with the .ega file extension are simple in format. Being only 4 bit, they are stored in a series of 4 one-bit images in EGA bitplane form alongside a mask on the end, which are then combined to get the final image. These images are stored as such to acquire faster speed because they are written directly to the EGA video.
The picture graphics contained in files with the .ega file extension do not have transparency information. Rather, the sprites are the ones that contain the transparency generated by the fifth 1-bit image, each bit for each pixel where each bit is set to become transparent. There is also no size information contained in these files because they are hard coded in the EXE file.Author: IBM Incorporated
