What is the .EL File Extension?
.EL File Extension Description:
EL stands for Emacs Lisp, which is the same two letters used in creating the program source code file extension .el, which is considered as a dialect of the Lisp programming language. The file extension .el that contains the source code is used with GNU Emacs and XEmacs text based editors, with the rest of the code written in C language. A source code like the file extension .el is created usually to extend the functionality and customize Emacs, as well as build new applications that can run under the host system. Basically, a source code contains programming declarations or statements, which are saved into a file (in this case using the .el file extension), and loaded to a compiler program where it is converted to an executable application.
At the core of the Emacs programming language is Lisp, with extensions that support text editing, and features content sensitive editing modes with syntax coloring, to accommodate a wide array of file types including the .el file extension. Emacs has a built-in support for various languages including those written in Russian, Korean, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Greek and others. The application extends its functionality from add-on modules that include a project planner, calendar, mail and newsreader, and debugger interface.
Many of the file extensions generated by the application, including, but not limited to the .el file extension, are distributed with the GNU Emacs, which was initially used in 1976 at the MIT AI Laboratory ITS (Incompatible Timesharing System) as part of the TECO macros. The .el file extension supported Emacs, was known to be an abbreviation for Editor MACroS until it evolved and has been established to what it is today. The current stable release of Emacs that can create the file extension .el includes GTK+ Toolkit support, an enhanced keyboard and mouse system, and a better support for Unicode.
Applications using the .el file extension are considered special files, or those that are not specifically written for Emacs, but can be executed under the environment. It is important to place .el file extension types in the correct directory, and to append the necessary lines to the .emacs file to allow Emacs to recognize the program, and launch it as a native Emacs application.Author: Free Software Foundation, Inc.
