What is the .EXT File Extension?
.EXT File Extension Description:
The file format which Norton Commander uses is the EXT file extension. Files with the .ext format are evident in both the DOS program and the Windows 95 operating system. The .ext file extension and Norton Commander's basic function is to allow the users to alter files like synchronize directories and change file attributes. This function can be done through the Norton Commander's "text-based interface".
The resulting files with the .ext file extension are created through the two-file manipulation process of Norton Commander. When the user starts the program, the application will produce a set of two panels consisting of lists of files. The files in each panel can be easily configured, in order to show the necessary information about the files at the other panel, the directory tree, or any other number of other alternatives. Additionally, the .ext file extension is also produced through the use of Norton Commander commands, which used to be limited, but were then extended by the CTRL and ALT keys.
When the user needs to manipulate a text file and save it as a file with the .ext extension, he or she only needs to utilize the built-in text file viewer of Norton Commander or by pressing the F3 function key. Additionally, there is also a built-in editor within the Norton Commander program that has the capability to configure the contents of files with the .ext file extension. This can be done through the F4 function key command.
Norton Commander is considered as an orthodox file manager, or OFM program, and was initially released by Peter Norton Computing. Typically, the program is a file manager tool; thus, the .ext file extension can contain files that were previously compiled, edited, and configured by the user to suit his or her preferences.Author: Symantec
