What is the .FFI File Extension?
.FFI File Extension Description:
several programs use Fonts. Users are familiar with fonts in relation to word processor software. Fonts provide users with choices when it comes to the appearance of the characters that are used when creating text and documents.
Technically, the term font refers to a single size of a certain typeface. In example, a typeface Times New Roman is available in several fonts dependent on the size used. Sizes 12 Times New Roman characters are stored as one font while size 10 Times New Roman characters are stored as another font. Fonts are made up of all the characters needed, particularly, the alphabet, punctuation marks and numbers.
The use of fonts varies depending on the program and the hardware that is used. Some fonts can be used when creating documents on certain programs whereas not all printers support the characters stored in the fonts. The AllType program was developed by PageTech to allow fonts to be used with all software and hardware.
The AllType program converts existing fonts into scalable typefaces. The converted font is given the file extension .ffi. Fonts are originally stored as bitmap images. When the user selects a certain font for creating a document, the bitmap image, which stored the font, is selected and referenced by the program. Files with the FFI file extension do not store characters in bitmap format; rather they are saved as typefaces. The difference is that typefaces contain all the characters needed without consideration for size. If a file with the FFI file extension contains the typeface for the Times New Roman characters, only one file is needed, instead of a separate font file for each size available. Files with the FFI file extension contain typefaces, which can be resized by the application itself. Meaning the characters stored in these files can already support any font size requested by a program or printer.
Fonts that are being converted are given the FFI file extension. The user can then choose which format they want for the converted file so that the font can be converted to Intellifont, PostScript Type 1 or Type 3.Author: PageTech
