What is the .FIF File Extension?
.FIF File Extension Description:
The .fif file extension stands for "fractal image format." This refers to files used under the Genuine Fractals Software, a program for re-sampling images to be made in large print. It acts as a plug-in to Photoshop and other compatible image editors. Genuine Fractals is developed by onOne Software in Portland, Oregon, and is originally designed by Steven Bender.
FIF files have a resolution-independent property, due to the use of fractals. Fractals are fragmented geometric shapes that allow the sub-division of their parts. The type of compression they are subjected to is fractal compression.
Fractal compression is a method for lossy image compression that uses a fractal-based algorithm to achieve high levels of density. This algorithm converts all geometric shapes within the image into mathematical data, called fractal codes, which are used to recreate the encoded image. Because of this, .fif images are able to fill any screen size without losing sharpness. Their program to lose the relationship between pixels and resolutions renders the .fif files. This is where other image formats, such as JPEGs and GIFs, differ, because FIF images do not become pixelated.
FIF files do not support clipping paths like JPEGs can. They also do not support alpha channels, like those of TIFF files. This means that .fif images cannot contain simple outline information. In addition, FIF images can only work with images under the RGB color system; but they can be opened under any color system a user specifies.
FIF image files can be compared to Vector-based images, as both do not lose image definitions with scaling. The .fif file extensions are native to the MAC operating system, but can also work on Windows.
