What is the .FMF File Extension?

.FMF File Extension Description:

FMF files describe FaxMan Jr Fax files, which are generated by an imaging development tool called FaxMan Jr. This tool, developed by Data Techniques Incorporated, allows the fast integration of fax support and fax modems that are industry-standard.

Generally, all fax files have a TIFF Image Format. The fax files generated by FaxMan Jr. have the .fmf file extension, which is a TIFF Group 3 format. This format is the universal protocol used by fax documents in sending through phone lines. In addition, FMF files used by FaxMan Jr. have a multi-page support, which allows a single file to have an unlimited number of fax pages.

Files with the .fmf extension are raster images that typically are basic black and white. The resolution of these files includes two modes -- 103x98 dpi, which is standard, and 203x196 dpi, which is fine. FMF files support image compression, and following TIFF Group 3 formats, contain scan lines that are found in fax documents and are encoded independently.

The compression methods used on FMF files fall under the TIFF group 3 compression schemes. There are three compression types: Modified Huffman (MH), Modified READ (MR), and Modified Modified READ (MMR).

Files with the .fmf file extension are created in only three ways. The first is using FaxMan Jr ActiveX Control and print drivers. This is the most common method and allows users to create faxable files from any Windows Operating System application. The second way of creating the .fmf extension is through importing. PDF, BMP (monochrome), DCX, PCX, and TIFF images created by other ways can be imported as FMF files.

The third method for creating .fmf files is by using another application developed by Data Techniques, called ImageMan. This program is able to convert monochrome raster formats into the FMF format.
