What is the .FON File Extension?
.FON File Extension Description:
The file type FON was first created for the Microsoft Windows 3.x operating system. The file extension .fon was used as a data archive of the text rendition to be displayed in the Windows environment. The characteristics and protocols in the rendition of fonts used are encoded in binary format, and are basically a straightforward set of algorithms and template designs for the different characters of the alphabet.
There are several files with the .fon extension found in the system, each having its own unique and rigid character structure rendition. With that said, the fonts, which are supported by each FON file are fixed to a set of protocols. The text displayed in the Windows environment, as supported by a particular .fon file, cannot be modified into a way that will allow the text output itself to be resized, changed, and altered from its actual form. This is one of the limitations of the .fon file extension's characteristics, in which printouts also have issues with non-specified output, due to the different protocols and support by the printer.
Another drawback to the .fon format is the support for executable integration, which makes it a risk for the attachment of malware and remote execution of malicious codes. Furthermore, the .fon file type was also made rigid to be compatible only with Windows 3.x systems.
The recurring risks and inconvenience of using the .fon file type has ultimately led to its discontinued use as the next version of Windows was marketed.
The .fon file extension has been replaced with an improved and more flexible True Type Font, or TTF format. One of the improvements made for the latter are the support for the integration of color palettes and mapping for different styles. Another is the capability of the text to be modified, resized, and manipulated, as supported by the program using it. It also has an improved vectoring support to allow the text to be placed in different positions in and about images and page layouts.Author: Microsoft Corporation
