What is the .FRF File Extension?
.FRF File Extension Description:
The FRF file extension identifies First Reduction Files used with the Ginga Mission, the third Japanese X-Ray astronomy satellite. Ginga means "galaxy in Japanese. During Ginga's existence, it completed over 1000 pointed observations of around 350 different targets, covering all known classes of cosmic X-ray sources.
The basic units of Ginga are the data stored in files with the .frf file extension, which reflect the stream of telemetry from the satellite. These files are related to the data collected from Ginga in one pass over to the Kagoshima Space Center. Their names are assigned according to the date and time that their data were received and if the data collected are in real time or only came from the bubble memory of Ginga.
Each file with the .frf file extension begins with a header line containing its filename, the name of its associated file, the data start and stop time, the first target's name as observed in the file, the target RA (right ascension) and DEC (declination), and the second target's name as observed in the file and its RA and DEC.
The second line of the file with the .frf file extension includes its duration, the RA and DEC of the three pointing positions of its data namely: the mode name, the start time of the operation's first mode, and the bit rate used. It also includes additional lines, which can contain the time of the succeeding mode changes, the bit rate used, and the mode of the data
The original files with the .frf file extension are available in HDS (Hierarchical Data Systems) format by means of the GINGAFRF database table. This database, prepared with log sheets known as 'kiroku', is the best route for accessing raw data which can be selected in accordance with pointing directions, bit rates, observation dates, operating modes, etc.
The files with the .frf file extension are also available in FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) format through the GINGARAW database table. This database originates from the keywords stored in the primary header of the FITS file with the .frf file extension. Each record in the database is related to a different pointing position, thus, up to three records can be associated with the same file but with different object name and position.Author: High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (,HEASARC),
