What is the .G16 File Extension?
.G16 File Extension Description:
The G16 file extension references the compiled configuration files used by GoldED, an application designed as a FidoNet mail reader when running on the MS-DOS platform. The number 16 identifies the series of configuration files created by the application.
FidoNet is a network of approximately 10,000 systems for exchanging mail and files by means of modems using a proprietary protocol. These networks are connected thru a series of gateway systems that interrelate with the Internet via UUCP (Unix to Unix Copy) with collaborating smart hosts, which act as their MX-receivers.
The GoldED application has been recognized as a powerful mail and newsreader generated by Fidonet and the Internet. Even as GoldED is highly configurable, it relies on the G16 file extension to save its configuration as plain text files. GoldED is compatible with most of the popular message board format such as JAM, Squish, *msg, Hudson, Goldbase, PC Board, WildCat and the more complex AdeptXBBS.
Presently, GoldED runs only on text mode. This application is capable of handling messages that it completely edits and rewrites. Advanced users can access the GoldED message handling features by opening the file with the .g16 file extension on Unix mailboxes and other news spools (such as enrollment).
In newer versions, GoldED uses the file with the .g16 file extension as an advanced configuration reader that is more flexible and is designed to follow a new rule-based area grouping system.
The file with the .g16 file extension offers offline and online Internet mail. It also enjoys full MIME support and attachment as it allows capabilities for advanced searching over the Internet. It has the following MIME: application/x-fasttrack.
The file with the .g16 file extension is also classified as an audio file and is identified by unique hexadecimal characters. It can be opened on various platforms such as DOS, DOS 32-bit, OS/2, Win32 and Linux. GoldED-asa's version names became too long to fit to the MSDOS 8+3 format. Thus, its final version, GoldED-asa10 beta 3, was renamed to GoldED+ and its next release was called GoldED+ 1.1.0.Author: Goldware Inc.
