What is the .GBL File Extension?
.GBL File Extension Description:
The Gerber file format is the industry standard used by every PCB CAD systems for transferring information to several devices that convert printed circuit board (PCB) data to exact patterns or artwork. The Gerber Scientific Instruments, the company who pioneered the manufacture of photoplotters, developed it.
The format is a family of data formats based on the standard set by the EIA RS-274D and later extended by Mass Parameters called the RS-274X. Mass Parameters define the characteristics affecting specific parts of the plot called layers. Each conductive layer of the completed PCB is provided with detailed information in a series of command files later known as the Gerber files.
The Gerber files uses different file extensions for every conductive layer like the GTL file extension for the Gerber Top Layer files, the GBO file extension for Gerber Bottom Overlay files, and the GBL file extension for the Gerber Bottom Layer files. The Gerber Bottom Layer refers to the solder layer that defines the border side of PCB where majority of the parts have the leads attached by a soldering iron.
Just like the rest of the Gerber files, the files with the .gbl file extension are written in ASCII format providing the photoplotter with four pieces of information, namely the X/Y Coordinates, the Aperture Selections, the Shutter Commands, and the End of Line Characters. All the so-called aperture information that is included within the actual header of the file, providing all the necessary information required in fabricating the related portion of the PCB layer.
The filenames for Gerber files have to be quite descriptive in order to provide the complete information for the PCB fabricator. This is to completely understand which layer and board each file applies to such as the file with the .gbl file extension applied to the bottom layer of the board. The general rule is to include each set of files with a readme text file that can be used by the PCB vendors as the starting point for the board manufacturing process.
The file with the .gbl file extension is composed of a number of data blocks containing parameters and codes where each data block is delimited by an asterisk as the end-of-block character. One or more data blocks are grouped into a layer of information describing a part of the image.Author: Gerber Systems Corporation
