The application has a rich GUI (Graphical User Interface) that simplifies the user's input, and can include pictures, texts, and images about certain individual in the family tree. Some features of the Great Family application are:

* It allows users to create a visual representation of their family genealogy

* Users can design their own family tree

* Create genealogy reports

* GEDCOM compatibility support for GED file formats

* Useful features that simplify the creation of the family history, like textboxes, objects, image galleries, and so on.

* Able to publish the family history in Web documents for easy upload onto the Internet

When a user creates a project using the Great Family 2.2 application, saving it will automatically generate a file that has a specified filename with a .gd3 file extension. The file with a GD3 format will include different data, like text (name, address, contact info, family designation, and so on), objects (lines and text boxes), graphics and images, and galleries.

When the application loads the file with a .gd3 extension, it will retrieve all the data and place each on designated areas in the application's GUI.

Also, using the data input of the user about each individual of the family tree, the system will create a graphical representation that follows the genealogical order of each item. Users in any design they wish can manipulate this.
